The artist as a neighbour / El artista como vecino

This is an index of all posts related to long-term projects based around my place of residency in South London. I have a long standing commitment to working locally, both as an artist and as a community organiser.

Tulse Hill Diaries (2010-12)

Tulse Hill Diaries was started early in 2010 as an exploration of life in Tulse Hill Estate, one of the largest social housing complexes in Lambeth, where I have lived since 1997. It is the main work of my doctoral research project: Living together: The artist as a neighbour. You can read a bit more about my PhD research here.

Do you remember Olive Morris? (2006-2011)

This was a long and collective investigation on the life of Brixton activist Olive Morris (1952-1979), community and cultural memory, the persistence of the imaginary of 1960s and 1970s black activism in our present fascination with countercultural politics and last but not least, the ways in which young women might find a political voice today.

Night Time in Southwark (2008-2009)
Southwark Artist in Residency
Acme Studios, South London Gallery and Southwark Council.

This project took place in and around Southwark, form the base of my studio in Peckham. It consisted of events, walks, interventions and conversations, exploring night time as both a location for making and showing art, and as a conceptual framework for dialogue. The end of the project was marked with the publication of ‘Night Time’ an artist book with essays, poems, photos and artwork by myself and a wide spectrum of people from Southwark. An exhibition of original artwork, ‘At night I’, was held at Camberwell Space in September 2009 to mark the launch of the ‘Night Time’. The publication was funded by Arts Council England Grants for the arts and is available from Unbound – the Live Art Development Agency‘s online shop.

Una Sola Casa: Latinos in Lambeth (2003-2004)
A collaboration with artist Inti Hernandez and the Latin American Housing Cooperative.
Gasworks International Residency Programme

This was an exploration of the history, life and aspirations of the Latin American community in Lambeth, focusing on the experiences of a group of families from the Latin American Housing Coop. Thinking about the house as both a literal and a methaphorical space for dwelling, the project involved day trips, film nights, discussion forums, parties, and renovation of communal areas in Myatts Field Estate, where the Coop was located at the time.
