This event is part of ATD Fourth World celebrations of International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

Monday 17 October 2011, 8.30 am to 3.00 pm
Bus stops on Tulse Hill Road: Jubilee Primary School East and West side.

To mark International Day for the Eradication of Poverty 2011, we invited people to contribute to the making of a Poverty and Wealth Map. Setting up shop at the bus stops along Tulse Hill Estate in South London – a place sometimes described as “economically deprived” – we aimed to survey what local people might think of as poverty today, and what forms of wealth can be found in the area.

We made an A4 flyer with some of the thoughts shared by people stopping by to chat to us at the bus stop. These flyers will be posted to all flats in Tulse Hill Estate and distributed locally at shops, libraries and by ATD Fourth World. early in 2012. Here is the front and the back of the flyer.

This work was inspired by Charles Boothe‘s maps, made as part of his extensive survey into life and labour in London, dating from 1886 to 1903. In the image below you can see a section of Booth’s map showing the area where Tulse Hill Estate is now. The colours red and yellow indicated respectively: “Middle class. Well-to-do” and “Upper-middle and Upper classes. Wealthy”.
